1996 — PhD Student at the Institute of Russian Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Candidate (1996) and Doctor of Philology (2002).
1996–2002 — Junior Researcher, Researcher, Senior Researcher, Leading Researcher of the Folklore Department of the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkin House) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Since 1998 — Guest Lecturer, Department of Anthropology, European University at St. Petersburg.
Since 2002 — Leading Researcher and Head of the Centre for Literary-Theoretical and Interdisciplinary Studies at the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkin House) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
2002 — Visiting professor at the Slavic Studies Department of the University of Wisconsin.
2004–2005 — Visiting scholar at the School of Slavic and Eastern European Studies (SOAS) at the University of London.
2005–2009 — Professor, Department of Russian Literature, Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia.
Since 2010 — Professor at the Smolny Institute of St. Petersburg State University. Head of the Centre of Sociology and Anthropology.
