1992 — Graduated from the State Institute of Theatrical Art.

1996 — Received his PhD in English literature from Cambridge University.

1996–2006 — wrote for the Financial Times newspaper.

Since 2007 — Moscow Bureau Chief for The Economist.

Author of The Invention of Russia: The Journey from Gorbachev’s Freedom to Putin’s War (London: Atlantic Book, 2015), which won the Orwell Prize in 2016.

Lives in Moscow.
